When I was younger I didn’t know that there are different types of watch movements. I had digital watches when I was in kindergarten and primary school, so I knew they worked with battery.
Later I learned the word “quartz” from the back of the watches. But I still didn’t know about the other types.
I was around 12 or 13 when I found an old hand-winding Doxa pocket watch at home. This was the moment when I realised that watches are not all battery powered. Nobody told me anything about watches before, so I had to learn everything on my own.
Slowly I started to prefer mechanical watches. I love their difficulty, how they are assembled and the magnificent way they are working, the gears and all of their parts. Just amazing for me.
I could just stare at the movement for hours and think about nothing. It’s like a meditation. They are all balanced, they don’t have to worry about anything, they just have to do their job, “keeping the time”.
They mean peace and calm to me. And it’s wonderful.
