The New Borealis Adraga – A Casual Field Watch

The New Borealis Adraga

I am a big fan of Borealis watches, and after this article you will become one too!

The new Adraga field watch came out a few weeks ago. Although you could only pre-order it, it’s already out of stock!

Borealis Watch Company is a Portuguese Microbrand. The word “Borealis” means “ northern”. You maybe heard about the “Aurora Borealis”, or  “Northern Lights”.

Praia da Adraga is a North Atlantic beach in Portugal, so maybe this is where the name of the watch is came from.

The Adraga came out with several dial variants.

You can choose between black with and without a flag pattern, white snow flake, white with flag pattern, fumed blue, blue, blue turquoise, and salmon with flag pattern.

You also could choose between the hands, the two options are “Mercedes” and “Commando” hands. So there are a lot of variations.

Although the company says it’s a field watch, it has a 300m water resistance and a screw down crown. These things are not so usual for a field watch, but they are absolutely good specifications. So it’s almost like a dive watch except the rotating bezel.

Field Watches generally are watches with a great visibility. It is also true in this case with the Adraga. You can easily see the time in darkness, even if the lumes are not loaded. The commando hands and the indices are so shiny, they are reflecting every piece of photons.

It has Swiss Made RC Tritec BGW9 lume applied to the indices, and the watch hands are filled with the same thing(hours, minutes, seconds). They are easily loaded, and they shine for a decent amount of time!

My black dial has a so called “flag” pattern, which is way more interesting than a smooth dial.

The case is a 316L Stainless Steel case which is a general great choice! Nice polishing, smooth surfaces and corners everywhere.

Personally I really like the premium Jubilee bracelet, it makes the whole watch way more elegant than a usual field watch or dive watch. It feels really comfortable for me, every piece of the bracelet is a quality job.

The first thing that came into my mind when I first saw the Adraga was that this is a mixture of the famous Rolex Explorer and Datejust. With the Jubilee bracelet it makes more similar. But when you look closer, it is different and you can’t say it’s an homage. And the whole watch looks just amazing!

The case diameter is 39.50 mm excluding the crown. This size makes the watch even more casual. A lot of people nowadays don’t like watches under 44mm or 42mm sizes. But if you think of the vintage watches you hardly will find any of these sizes. I don’t say you can’t, but men wore watches around 38mm back in the days.

The clasp and the screw down crown are signed, you can find the Borealis logo, the “B” on them.  And they are also made of 316L stainless steel.

The watch has a Sapphire crystal doubled domed glass with anti-reflective coating inside.A Sapphire crystal is always a good choice I could say!

Personally I love the screwed case back with engraved mermaid, it looks beautiful. With the mermaid on the back I ask myself, maybe this is a hybrid watch, a mixture of a field and a dive watch? Maybe! The back is also made of 316L Stainless Steel.

Inside of the watch works a Miyota 90S5 Automatic Movement, which is a 24 jewelled open heart movement with 42 hours running time. It’s a premium movement from the Japan manufacturer.

Sapphire crystal, Japan automatic movement. The two important specs for a great micro brand watch, right?

The price. You have to pay in two parts, first when you order the watch and then you pay the second half (right/just) before shipping. The total amount is: 571.5 USD.

Currently the website says “Sold Out” for all of the watches! You can check out the watches here.

All in all this watch is a good choice for the price, great specifications. You won’t see another one on the streets, on the bus or anywhere, I am sure about it!

It is a mixture of good things, and for me it’s more like a casual piece than a tool watch!
